HMLA-269 History HMLA-269 was formed at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina on 22 February 1971 and activated on 1 July 1971 as the Marine Corps first designated Attack Helicopter squadron. The mission of HMLA-269 is to support the Marine Air-Ground Task Force commander by providing offensive air support, utility support, armed escort, and airborne supporting arms coordination; day or night; under all weather conditions; during expeditionary, joint, or combined operations. History Early years HMLA-169 sourced a detachment of 4 Cobras and 3 Hueys to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (15th MEU), which was the among the first Marines into Afghanistan after the September 11 attacks in 2001. The squadron deployed to Iraq in late February 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). HMA-269 flew the AH-1J until December 1977, when it received the AH-1T. The Gunrunners then made history again in 1979 by being the first Marine Squadron to fire a TOW missile from an airborne platform. In the early 1980s, HMA-269 received its first UH-1N Hueys, and as a permanent composite squadron was redesignated HMLA-269.
